340,000 Still Evacuating 18 Months after Japan Disaster

"Some 340,000 people are still living as evacuees 18 months after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which devastated coastal areas in northeastern Japan and left some 18,700 people dead or missing" reports Jiji Press.

"While the pace of reconstruction efforts has accelerated in many disaster areas, there has been little progress on group relocation programs due to difficulties finding land.

In the northeastern Japan prefectures of Iwate and Miyagi, some 80 pct of the disaster debris has not yet been disposed of.

Fukushima Prefecture, also northeastern Japan, is still struggling with the results of the nuclear accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s disaster-stricken Fukushima No. 1 power plant.

According to the National Police Agency, the death toll of the disaster rose by 16 in the last six months to stand at 15,870 as of Monday, while the number of people listed as missing fell by 341 to 2,814."
